RM of Eldon’s story
The Rural Municipality of Eldon No. 471 took shape in the early years of settlement. It began on April 26, 1907, as Local Improvement District 24-5-3, and on December 13, 1909, it was incorporated as a rural municipality. Today the RM surrounds the town of Maidstone and the village of Waseca, and its office is in Maidstone.
One of the best-known spots in the RM is Silver Lake Regional Park, on the eastern part of Silver Lake, about 12 kilometres north of Maidstone off Highway 21. A swimming area was established on the lake in 1961. By 1963 there was a picnic area, playground, sports ground and concession, and in 1964 the site became a regional park. Over the years it has grown and added amenities. In 1971 a dyke was built at the lake's outflow to steady water levels and improve the beach.
Today the park of over 105 hectares offers a campground with 128 campsites, a beach, ball diamonds, mini golf, hiking trails and a picnic area. It is also home to the Silver Lake Golf Club, a 9-hole course with grass greens and a licensed clubhouse that serves food.
